What's happening at OFS?

Community Based Instruction Trip

In anticipation of Mother’s Day, all of the lower school students spent the week writing their mothers a letter. At Orchard, we take every opportunity to make writing functional. We also take every opportunity to tie what the students are learning to community based instruction. The kids worked on brainstorming ideas, sketching out rough drafts and writing clean final copies of their friendly letters. Once their letters were ready, they addressed their envelopes. The next step was getting the letters in the mail. Before our trip to the post office, each student counted out coins to pay for their stamp. Together, we walked to the post office in Palmyra, bought stamps, and mailed our letters! The post master was ecstatic to meet all of our students. She asked many questions about our school, the kids, and what we do at Orchard Friends. She was so kind that she shared her phone number with us and told us to come back for a tour. Idiom of the Week at OFS

Does your child have difficulty understanding figurative language? Children with language based learning differences often do. It is important for every child at OFS to understand idioms and how adults and other kids use them, since they are so common in everyday conversation. Idioms are commonly used phrases that say one thing but mean something completely different. Like “spill the beans”, “piece of cake” or “it’s raining cats and dogs.” Many students at OFS are literal thinkers and find idioms confusing.

OFS Geography Fair March 4, 2016

Since the start of school in September, every student at OFS has been learning geography at their own instructional level. Each class started with learning the basics of geography such as land forms, climates, and map skills. The students then moved on to learning about continents, countries, and oceans. As we approached winter break, we incorporated studying various holiday traditions from around the world. Students loved learning about the different stories of Santa Claus, exotic foods, and unique traditions that people have.

Join Us for the 2nd Annual Give Back Brunch!

The students at Orchard Friends School are planning our 2nd Annual Give Back Brunch to celebrate the role local first responders and public service personnel play in our community. Invitees include Police, Fire, EMS, Public Works, Municipal, Post Office, Library, and Court personnel from Riverton, Cinnaminson, Palmyra, and surrounding areas.
