OUR IRON HILL FUNDRAISER WAS A GRAND EVENT What a grand event it was!! It was great to see so many of our OFS family members past and present gather together. In addition to an enjoyable night out to dinner with family and friends our fundraiser at Iron Hill raised $1000 for OFS. Many thanks to Matt Riggins for arranging our night out with Iron Hill. Get Full PDF Ask Your Child About V&V   Each student has Visualizing and Verbalizing as part of his or her schedule every week. This program by Lindamood-Bell directly addresses written and oral language comprehension, as well as oral language expression. V & V teaches concept imagery step by step. Concept imagery is the ability to create a whole image from language that is heard or read. It is the underlying function needed for comprehen- sion and critical thinking. The students learn to make connections between the parts of a writ- ten passage or social situation, in order to un- derstand the big picture. Check your child’s schedule for which day he or she has V & V. Then ask…What did you picture in V & V today? Ask for details with specific questions. As the year progresses, your child should be able to provide you with more and more detail. You should be able to picture what they are picturing. And every time you ask, you are reinforcing his or her skills in concept im- agery. Every time you ask, you are helping improve their reading comprehension, listening comprehension and verbal expression...

SOMETHING NEW AT SCHOOL Orchard has added a new and exciting component to the morning Collection schedule. At the conclusion of Collection each day the staff and students partake in some form of movement activity before heading up to homeroom. Studies have shown that exercise and learning go hand-in-hand. The exercises also help to build better bonds between all those involved. Some of our activities are as simple as tag, and sharks and minnows. More complex exercises focus on motor planning and function, memory games, and spatial awareness. Besides, who wouldn’t want an excuse to go run around for ten minutes before classes start?! Full...

Apple 9/25/14     EXPLORING THE BOGS On September 26, 2014, the students of Orchard Friends School went on an adventure to the Cranberry bogs in Chatsworth, New Jersey. A friend of Miss Dietrick’s, who is a fungal pathologist in the bogs, was kind enough to show us around and tell about the farming of blueberries and cranberries. We got to explore the bogs, look for diseased cranberries, pick and try fresh cranberries, and see the bugs that live in the bogs. It was a beautiful day and we learned so much!
